Olivier Clément, auteur de la pièce       [English version at the bottom]

Olivier Clement, author of the play :

Actually I am an accountant, but also passionned by theater. I have been acting in the Charleroi county in Belgium, and played different roles since I am 12.

I am a fan of Stephen King and I’ve read all of his novels. However, “Eyes of the Dragon’, have always been one of my favorites. For me, it is not a “fairy tale”. Beside, as the High Judge Peyna says in the novel, “there are no more dwarves.”
Stephen King purposely used a world without magic creatures to do not get tied to Heroic Fantasy. He delivers a story that give a well place to human beings, to their dilemmas, their feelings, their problems in the daily life, in their relationship between the parents and children, in the choices that we are facing everyday and whom other lives are depending.

All of this touch me and shake me everytime I read this novel. We are in front of parents that love their kids but that rarely tells them, and that are able to fight for protecting them; against a young man manipulated by evil, that leaves aside his own brother, because of blindness or by jealousy and he then truly repents for what he did; against a mistake of the law the way it sometimes occurs in the current world, with all the consequences and all the marks that it can leave in the mind of innocent people; against the limitless love of a man for his spouse or of a son for his father and at the tearing of the loss of a relative.

Isnt all of that close from us, even if it is in the Kingdom of Delain?

This is the reason why I wanted to turn this story in a play.

So I took every chapter, one by one, I rewrote them as conversations. Then, I sorted them in chronological order of the story, I took of what was unnecessary or impossible to put on a playscene. I favored the story, the characters, the feelings, the fight between good & evil, and I added some magic thanks to an actor which is also a professional magician and that does magic trick on scene while playing the storyteller, the one that builds the story and that interacts with the audience.

At first, I contacted Albin Michel (King’s French publisher) that gave me the contact details of King’s agent in Los Angeles, that gave me the details of a lawyer in New York, JD Kramer, which who I have been in touch since then. Indeed, I have been sending a weekly email to him to do not foget me, and until I had an answer. A little bit like Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Redemption, or him to get his library.

I sometimes had doubt that it would work. Inter alia because it is a long work. And at a time, Mr Kramer told me that a movie adaptation was on project and that the cinema was more important than theater. Luckily for me, this project failed and so I got the right to direct it for theatre, what I spent hours writing.

However, my motivation have always been flawless. I absolutely wanted to realise this dream, even if it would have been my only dream I would have realised, I needed to see that with my eyes, I had to complete at least a thing that people would remember while talking about me.

Then came the setting. I had to give life to these words, that the comedian show all the feelings that touched me while reading the novel. Ideas had to be found to go beyond the novel, to be original, put some of me in this scenes. I think I managed to do so because people that knows me and that have seen this show, told me “we recognise you in a lot of the scenes”, and that made me happy.

I choose a bared stage. Only few items are recurring as a table or a bed, but dressed different ways according to the place where it is. There is a throne in the room of the throne (surprisingly), a fireplace at Peyna’s, a giganteous head of dragon created by the kids of a local DIY workshop.

The actors are all novices, some have more experiences than others. There are 19 actors. The youngest is 12 and is playing Peter the prince, as a kid. All of them are really in their role and followed me at 200% in this project… I am really proud of them. They composed their role according to the guidance I was giving them, and succeed to feel and show the feelings that I wanted.

Flagg is really impressive, the story-teller is wonderful with the audience and please everyone with his eccentricity and his magic tricks, the queen Sasha is magnifiscent in her outfits & her role, Peter as a kid is very true and appropriate thanks to his youth. I wont go through all of them, but their work is exceptional.

About my projects, I am considering improving this one even more, and maybe playing it again in Belgium or somewhere else.
