Interview : Richard Chizmar, le fondateur des éditions Cemetery Dance et ami de Stephen King

Puisque le livre « Gwendy et la boite à boutons » est ‘récemment’ sorti aux éditions du Livre de Poche, nous avons demandé à Richard Chizmar, co-auteur du livre avec Stephen King, et également fondateur des éditions Cemetery Dance, si il souhaitait participer à une  interview.

Club Stephen King : Bonjour Richard et merci d’accepter cette interview. Pour les fans de Stephen King qui ne vous connaitraient pas, pouvez-vous  svp vous présenter ?

Mari, père de deux garçons, j’habite au nord du Maryland, j’écris et publie depuis le début de ma vie d’adulte. J’ai démarré le magazine « Cemetery Dance » lorsque j’étais à l’université, en 1988, et n’ai jamais regretté. Je suis reconnaissant pour tous les jours passé, ça a été une sacré aventure ! 

Club Stephen King : Vous avez fondé Cemetery Dance en 1988-1989, et j’ai partagé il y a quelques semaines une vieille publicité sur instagram qui fut publiée dans le fanzine « Castle Rock ».
Je pense que votre première collaboration avec Stephen King a été pour l’édition limitée de « From a buick 8 » (Roadmaster, en français), en 2002, mais est-ce que ça l’était vraiment ?

From A Buick 8 était la première édition limitée, mais j’avais déjà travaillé avec Steve sur des projets plus modestes, publiant plusieurs de ses nouvelles dans différentes anthologies et, bien entendu, la première publication de « Chattery Teeth » dans « Cemetery Dance » en 1991.*

*Signalons que les éditions J’ai Lu, ont publié, en 2002, une anthologie française intitultée « Au seuil des ténèbres« , correspondant à l’anthologie américaine « The Best of Cemetary Dance » (1998) qui intégrait justement la nouvelle « Dentier sauteur » (Chattery Teeth) de Stephen King.
Mais saviez-vous que cette anthologie a été traduite par Delphine et Henri Loevenbruck?  Ce dernier étant depuis devenu un auteur français à succès !

Club Stephen King : Quelle a été votre première rencontre en personne? Comment c’était ?

Steve avait organisé une grande fête en 1999 pour célébrer les 25 ans de la publication de « Carrie ». Cela s’était déroulé à la « Tavern on the Green » à New York. Il avait été assez gentil de m’inviter avec ma femme. C’était la première fois que je le rencontrais. Il était gentil, généreux et amusant. C’était vraiment excitant, c’est le moins qu’on puisse dire.

Club Stephen King : « Gwendy’s button box » a récemment été publié en France (sous le titre “Gwendy et la boite à boutons” aux éditions du Livre de Poche). En combien de langues a t’il été traduit?

Il me semble que nous avons vendu les droits de « Gwendy » pour 16 ou 17 pays. Je pense que la vente la plus récente était pour les Pays Bas.

Club Stephen King : Comment s’est déroulée votre collaboration avec Stephen King?
Pouvez-vous s’il vous plait nous en dire plus sur le processus de création de cette histoire ?

Steve et moi échangions par email au sujet de différents projets impliquant plusieurs auteurs. Il a mentionné une histoire qu’il n’arrive pas à finir. Je lui ai dit que j’adorerai la lire si il désirai la partager. Le lendemain, je recevais un email avec « Gwendy » en pièce jointe accompagnée d’un court message me disant d’en faire ce que je voulais.
Quelques jours plus tard, on était lancé.

Quant au processus, j’ai repris l’histoire où Steve l’avait laissé, il avait écrit environ 10 000 mots, puis nous nous sommes renvoyé le manuscrit, chacun ajoutant de petites sections avant de l’envoyer à l’autre pour qu’il continue. C’était amusant.
 

Club Stephen King : Est-ce que c’était stressant d’écrire “avec” Stephen King?

Seulement pour les premières heures (mon dieu, j’étais extrêmement nerveux), mais après ça je me suis perdu dans l’histoire et me suis trouvé à me promener à Castle Rock, dans le Maine.
L’histoire est venue à plein pot après ça.
 

Club Stephen King : Avez-vous lu “Elevation” que Stephen King a décrit comme étant une sorte de suite à Gwendy?

J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir la découvrir en manuscrit, donc je l’ai maintenant lu plusieurs fois.
C’est une nouvelle vraiment particulière, qui convient très bien avec l’environnement dans lequel nous vivons actuellement. J’ai adoré chaque mot. Quant au fait qu’il s’agisse d’une suite à « Gwendy », la seule vraie connexion est que chacune des histoires se déroule à Castle Rock.

Club Stephen King : Cemetery Dance a eu une longue relation avec Stephen King. D’éditions limitées (“From a buick 8”, “Carrie”, “Shining”, sans oublier les exclusivités “Secretary of the Dreams”, “The Dark Man”, “Riding the bullet, the deluxe double edition”, plus récemment “Flight or Fright”), et bien entendu des livres au sujet de Stephen King (la bibliographie de Justin Brooks, “This Dark Chest of Wonders”) et bien d’autres.
Si l’on met de côté “Gwendy” et “Flight”, quels sont vos livres préférés de Cemetery Dance? Et pourquoi ?

Question difficile, mais si je dois n’en garder qu’un, alors ce sera “Ça”. J’ai lu ce roman lors de sa sortie et il m’a aidé à me reconcentrer sur ma propre écriture, ainsi que le genre de l’horreur. Sans « Ça », il n’y aurait pas de Cemetery Dance.
C’est donc certain. “Ça” est mon roman préféré.

Club Stephen King : Cemetery Dance planche sur une collection des livres de Stephen King publiés par Doubleday, et a des projets intéressants autour de King. Il me semble même qu’il y a un projet en cours concernant les memorabilias et les livres de collection. Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus ? Quels sont les projets qui vous excitent le plus ?

Ils sont tous très excitant! Être en mesure de publier ces classiques de Stephen King dans un format de luxe, souvent avec des petits bonus, c’est réellement un rêve devenu une réalité.
 

Club Stephen King : Hormis Stephen King, quel est le projet de Cemetery Dance que vous admirez le plus?  

Oh mon dieu, c’est trop difficile de répondre à celle-ci. Nous avons publié tout le monde de Ray Bradbury à Richard Matheson, Peter Straub à Clive Barker, Anne Rice à Robert McCammon, Joe Hill, Joe Landsale et Owen King… et des centaines d’autres… c’est trop difficile d’en choisir un préféré !

Club Stephen King : Y a t‘il un projet sur lequel vous rêverez de travailler mais n’avez pas encore eu la chance de faire?

Il y en a tellement. J’aimerai publier une édition limitée du livre « The Ceremonies » de T.E.D Klein*. J’aimerai publier des éditions limitées de plusieurs King, dont « Histoire de Lisey »

*« The Ceremonies », de T.E.B Klein est un livre, inédit en français, qui a été encensé par Stephen King lors de sa sortie. Ainsi, l’édition Viking de 1984 comportait le blurb suivant en quatrième de couverture :
“The ceremonies… est un livre merveilleux, excitant et mystérieux, riche en tension et possédant un sens profond du mystère. C’est un vrai roman gothique prenant place dans notre temps, un qui peut facilement être élevé au niveau des classiques de cet étrange et puissant genre, et le plus excitant roman de son champ depuis « Ghost Story » de Peter Straub. Je m’y suis perdu pendant plusieurs jours, et c’est le meilleur cadeau qu’une histoire et un écrivain puissent offrir ».

 

Club Stephen King : Cet été, vous et Billy Chizmar étiez en tournage pour plusieurs films. « Trapped », inspiré d’une idée à vous et de Stephen King, ainsi que « Widow’s Point ».
Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus au sujet de ces deux projets ? Sont-ils des courts ou des longs métrages ? Est-ce qu’on les verra un jour ?

« Widow’s Point » est un long métrage realisé par Greg Lamberson et avec Craig Scheffer (A River Runs Through It). On l’a tourné cet été dans l’ouest de l’état de New York, et Billy et moi avons de grands espoirs à son sujet.

« Trapped » est un court métrage filmé fin juillet dans le Maryland. Billy l’a réalisé et j’ai écrit le scénario d’après une idée d’histoire que Steve et moi avons écrit ensemble. C’était une merveilleuse expérience. « Trapped » sera diffusé dans plusieurs festivals de films et finira par être diffusé en ligne.
 

Club Stephen King : Cemetery Dance rencontre beaucoup de succès ces derniers temps, signant même Robert McCammon, un auteur de genre qui était auparavant chez Subterranean Press si je ne dis pas de bêtise. J’ai beaucoup entendu parlé de lui (ainsi que de Brian Keene), mais n’ai à ce jour rien lu de lui.
Lequel de ses livres me recommanderiez-vous pour découvrir cet auteur ?

La réponse est simple est son plus recent disponible chez Cemetery Dance, l’incroyable lecture qu’est « The Listener ». Un roman à suspense qui invite à réfléchir et impossible à lâcher. Mais pour être totalement honnête, je recommanderai de commencer avec « Boy’s Life ». C’est un de mes préférés. Un livre magique.

Club Stephen King : Quels auteurs publiés par Cemetery Dance vous me recommanderiez?
J’ai déjà lu « Walpuski Typewriter » de Frank Darabont

Essayez McCammon. Je me pencherai aussi sur Bentley Little, Brian Freeman, Brian Keene ainsi que tout ce qui est sur la liste de Cemetery Dance.

Club Stephen King : Y a t-il un auteur que vous aimeriez faire signer chez Cemetery Dance?

Hmmmm. J’adore John Sanford. Il est plutôt un auteur populaire de thrillers et livres à suspense, donc je ne sais pas si des éditions limitées se vendraient, mais j’aimerai le découvrir.

Club Stephen King : Avez-vous regardé la série “Castle Rock”? Qu’en pensez-vous?

J’ai été trop occupé avec le travail et la famille donc je n’ai pu voir que les trois premiers épisodes. J’ai vraiment apprécié ce que j’en ai vu pour le moment.

Club Stephen King : Vous semblez avoir une belle collection et vous donnez souvent des livres dédicacés par Stephen King sur Twitter & Instagram. Que collectionnez-vous ?
Et quels sont vos livres les plus précieux ?

Je ne collectionne rien en particulier. J’aime les beaux livres, donc j’ai une grande variété de livres rares et d’éditions limitées, beaucoup d’entre eux m’étant dédicacés.

Club Stephen King : Quels sont les projets sur lesquels vous travaillez, qu’ils soient associés ou non à King ?

Je travaille actuellement sur le livre « Le Fléau » dans la collection des livres publiés par Doubleday, et quelques autres projets. Il y en a trop pour les lister. Et une tonne d’écriture de sujets plus personnels.

Club Stephen King : Voulez-vous ajouter quoi que ce soit pour les fans de Stephen King?
Y a-t-il quelque chose que je ne vous ai pas demandé mais que vous auriez voulu que je vous demande ?

Principalement juste les remercier pour le suivi de Cemetery Dance depuis toutes ces années. Je suis fier de faire partie des fidèles lecteurs!

Club Stephen King: Hello Richard, thanks for doing this interview. For Stephen King fans that may not know you, can you please do a small introduction of yourself?

Husband, father of two sons, live in northern Maryland, been writing/editing/publishing my entire adult life. Started Cemetery Dance magazine while I was in college back in 1988 and never looked back. Grateful for every single day—it’s been an adventure!

Club Stephen King: You founded Cemetery Dance by 1988-1989 and I shared, a few weeks ago, an old advertising for CD in the « Castle Rock » newsletter on instagram. I think that your first collaboration with Stephen King was with the limited edition of « From a Buick 8 », in 2002, but… was it your first « collaboration » with Stephen King?

From A Buick 8 was the first limited edition, but I had worked with Steve on smaller projects before that—publishing some of his stories in various anthologies and, of course, the first ever appearance of his story, “Chattery Teeth” in Cemetery Dance in 1991.

Club Stephen King: What was your first encounter, in real life, with Stephen King? How was it?

Steve threw a big party in 1999 to celebrate the 25^th anniversary of the publication of Carrie. It was held at Tavern on the Green in New York City. He was kind enough to invite my wife and me. That’s the first time I met him. He was kind and generous and funny; it was a thrill, to say the least.

Club Stephen King: « Gwendy’s button box » was recently released in France. How many languages was it translated to?

I believe we have sold the rights to Gwendy in 16 or 17 countries. I think the most recent sale has been to the Dutch.

Club Stephen King: How did that collaboration with Stephen King happen? Can you please tell us about the creative process of that story?

Steve and I were emailing about round robin type projects, involving multiple authors. He mentioned that he had a story he hadn’t been able to finish and I said I would love to read it if he felt like sending it along. The next day, an email showed up with Gwendy attached and a short note reading: “Do whatever you want with it.” A few days later, we were off and running.

As for the process, I picked up where Steve left off, wrote about 10,000 words, then we played ping pong back and forth with the manuscript, each of us adding smaller sections and sending to the other to continue. It was a blast.

Club Stephen King : Was it stressful to write « with » Stephen King?

Only for the first few hours—my goodness, I was a nervous wreck—but after that I became lost in the story and found myself walking around in Castle Rock, Maine. The writing came fast and furious after that.

Club Stephen King : Have you read « Elevation » that Stephen King described as a sort of sequel to Gwendy? Would you be able to elaborate a bit regarding the follow-up part to Gwendy?

I was fortunate enough to get an early peek in manuscript, so I’ve read Elevation several times now. It’s such a special story, very fitting for the climate we find ourselves living in at the moment. I loved every word of it. As for it serving as some kind of a follow-up to Gwendy, the only real connection is that both stories take place in Castle Rock.

Club Stephen King: Cemetery Dance have had a long-story relationship with Stephen King. From limited edition (“From a Buick 8”, “Carrie”, “Shining”) to exclusives (“Secretary of the Dreams”, “The Dark Man”, “Riding the bullet – exclusive deluxe double edition”, and the more recent « Flight or fright »), and books about Stephen King (Justin’s bibliography, “This Dark Chest of Wonders”) and others.
Taking aside « Gwendy » and « Flight or fright », can you please tell us what was your favorite Stephen King book that Cemetery Dance released?
And why?

Tough question, but if forced to list just one title, it would have to be IT. I read that novel when it was first published and it really refocused me on my own writing and the horror genre. Without IT, there would be no Cemetery Dance. That’s for sure. IT is my favorite novel.

Club Stephen King: Cemetery Dance is releasing the Doubleday collection edition, and have some interesting Stephen King related books in the pipeline. I believe that this include a book about King memorabilia and collectives. Any chance for you to tell us about some of the upcoming projects? What are the ones that excite you the most?

They’re all pretty darn exciting! To be able to publish these early King classics in a deluxe format, often with extra bells and whistles, is truly a dream come true.

Club Stephen King : Stephen King aside, what was the most exciting project you worked on with Cemetery Dance?

Oh goodness, very difficult to answer this one. We’ve published everyone from Ray Bradbury to Richard Matheson, Peter Straub to Clive Barker, Anne Rice to Robert McCammon, Joe Hill, Joe Lansdale, and Owen King…plus hundreds of others…so it’s near impossible to pick a favorite!

Club Stephen King: Is there a project that you wished you could work on, but never had a chance to do so?

Oh, lots of them. Would have loved to publish a limited edition of T.E.D. Klein’s The Ceremonies*. Would still love to publish several King limiteds, including Lisey’s Story.

*The Ceremonies, was a book recommended by Stephen King. The first american edition, published by Viking in 1984, had the following blurb :
“The ceremonies… is a wonderful, exciting and suspenseful book, full of tension and a sense of deep, brooding mystery. It’s a real gothic novel for our time and place, one that can easily rank with the classics of that strange and powerful genre, and the most exciting novel in the field to come along since Straub’s Ghost Story. I lost myself in it for a space of days, and that’s the greatest gift a story and a writer can give”

 

Club Stephen King: This summer, you and Billy Chizmar were on a filming trip of a couple of movies : « Trapped », based on an idea by you and Stephen King’s, as well as « Widow’s point ». Can you please tell us about those two projects? Are they short movies of feature films? Will we ever be able to see them?

Widow’s Point is a feature directed by Greg Lamberson and starring Craig Scheffer (A River Runs Through It). It filmed this summer in western New York, and Billy and I have really high hopes for it.

Trapped is a short and was filmed in late July here in Maryland. Billy directed, and I wrote the script based on a story outline that Steve and I wrote together. It was a wonderful experience. Trapped will appear at many film festivals and will eventually be offered online.

Club Stephen King: Cemetery Dance seems to be having quite a lot of  success recently, even signing Robert McCammon, an horror writer that was previously published by Subterranean Press if I am not mistaken. I have heard a lot about him (as well as Brian Keene), but have never read him. Which of his books would you recommend me to start with?

The easy answer is his most recent from Cemetery Dance, an amazing read called The Listener. Suspenseful, thought-provoking, and almost impossible to put down. But, if I’m being totally honest, I would have to recommend you pick up Boy’s Life first. It’s one of my all-time favorites. A magical book.

Club Stephen King: Can I ask which of the authors published by Cemetery Dance would you recommend me? I already have Frank Darabont’s « Walpuski’s typewriter » book

Definitely give McCammon a try. I would also take a close look at Bentley Little, Brian Freeman, Brian Keene, and pretty much anyone else on the CD list.

Club Stephen King: Is there an author that you would love to get to sign with Cemetery Dance?

Hmmmm. I love John Sanford. He’s much more of a mainstream thriller/suspense writer, so I’m not sure how limited editions would do, but I’d love to find out.

Club Stephen King: Have you watched the « Castle Rock » series? What have you thought of it?

I’ve been swamped with work and family stuff, so I’ve only had a chance to watch the first three episodes of Castle Rock. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve seen so far.

Club Stephen King: You seem to have quite a big book collection, and you are often giving away Stephen King signed books on Twitter & Instagram. What are you collecting exactly? And what are your most precious books?

I don’t really collect any particular items. I love nice books, so I have a great selection of rare and limited editions, many of them personally inscribed.

Club Stephen King: What projects are you currently on, Stephen King related or not? 

Working on King’s The Stand for the Doubleday series and a slew of other books, too many to list here! Also, a ton of personal writing projects.

Club Stephen King: Would you want to add anything to Stephen King fans? Is there anything that you would have wanted me to ask?

Mainly just give them my sincere thanks for supporting Cemetery Dance all these years. I’m proud to be part of the Constant Reader population!
