Interview : Lilja, fondateur de Lilja’s Library, partageant l’actualité de Stephen King depuis 1996!

Le site « Lilja’s Library« , fondé en 1996 par Lilja, un fan suédois de Stephen King, est sans conteste LE site pionnier et de référence pour toute l’actualité de Stephen King. Ayant échangé à plusieurs reprises avec Lilja depuis le tout début des années 2000s, il nous semblait intéressant de lui proposer une interview pour en découvrir un peu plus sur lui. 
D’autant plus qu’il a publié ou contribué à plusieurs livres autour / avec Stephen King, dont un qui s’apprête à ressortir avec un grand tirage en version originale !

Club Stephen King: Bonjour Lilja, merci d’avoir pris le temps d’accepter cette interview. Peux-tu s’il te plait te présenter pour les fans qui ne te connaitraient pas?

Lilja: Merci de me recevoir. Je suis fan de Stephen King depuis 36 ans, et je gère le site Liljas Library – The World of Stephen King, depuis 23 ans. J’ai sorti 3 livres liés à Stephen King, et j’organise des conférences sur King en Suede, où j’habite. Oh, et je suis un ENORME fan de King… 😊

Club Stephen King : Quand as-tu découvert Stephen King? Et quelle fut ta réaction? 

Lilja: Le premier livre que j’ai lu était « Carrie« , en 1983, lorsque j’avais 13 ans. Je l’ai apprécié, mais ce n’était pas un coup de foudre. Peu après je devais faire un rapport de lecture et j’ai choisi « Cujo« , principalement choisi sur la belle couverture, et après avoir lu celui-ci King m’avait. J’ai lu tous ses livres que je trouvais en Suede et une fois que je les avais tous lu, je les ai tous relus en anglais, et je les relis à nouveau.

Club Stephen King : Quel est ton livre préféré de Stephen King? 

Lilja: On me demande souvent cela, mais je ne peux pas juste en choisir un seul. Stephen King a écrit tellement de livres et dans une telle variété de styles que c’est impossible (de n’en choisir qu’un). J’aime « Le Fléau » et « Ça » qui vous garde dans l’histoire pendant un long moment. J’aime aussi « Marche ou crève« , qui est plutôt court mais possède de bons personnages. J’aime les séries de « Le Talisman » et « La Tour Sombre » ainsi que « Mr Mercedes« , qui est très différent. Et bien entendu ses nouvelles…

Club Stephen King: Tu as lancé le site « Lilja’s Library » en 1996. A l’époque, l’internet n’était pas ce que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. Qu’est-ce qui t’as poussé à le lancer? 

Lilja: Internet était nouveau, et ça ouvrait le monde d’une nouvelle manière. Soudainement, toutes ces informations étaient accessibles. Mais pourtant je ne trouvais un site sur Stephen King qui avait les informations que je voulais. Je devais parcourir plusieurs sites pour les trouver, et je me suis dit, « Est-ce vraiment difficile? Je vais juste lancer mon propre site », et nous voila, 23 années plus tard…

Club Stephen King : Je pense que j’ai commencé à accéder à internet vers 2000. J’ai rapidement découvert ton site et je me rappelle avoir lu au sujet du dollar baby « Paranoid » qui était diffusé en ligne. Est-ce que tu te rappelle de celui-ci?
Il a vraiment lancé une nouvelle vague de courts métrages et de dollars babies. J’ai peut-être faux, mais il me semble me rappeler que tu travaillais sur l’un d’eux. Ou était-ce Bernd?

Lilja: Oui, il a été fait par Jay Holben. C’était un bon dollar baby. En réalité, j’ai même un des carnets du film dans ma collection. Et ça devait être Bernd qui planchait sur un dollar baby. Je n’ai jamais essayé d’en faire un… pour le moment.

Club Stephen King : A travers les années, tu n’as pas seulement géré « Lilja’s Library », mais tu as aussi écrit et édité plusieurs livres. Certains d’entres eux ont même été traduits dans plusieurs langues! Je les mentionne aux éditeurs français, espérant qu’ils seront aussi diffusés en France… peux-tu nous en dire plus sur tes livres?

Lilja: Il y a 3 livres.

1. « Lilja’s Library – The World of Stephen King » (2010). Celui-ci regroupe les interviews et critiques que j’avais partagé sur le site et quelques unes réalisées exclusivement pour le livre. 

2. « The Illustrated Stephen King Movie Trivia Book » (2013). Il contient un grand nombre de questions sur les films, mini-séries et épisodes de télévisions inspirés de l’oeuvre de Stephen King. 

3. « Shining in the Dark – Celebrating Twenty Years of Lilja’s Library » (2017). Il s’agit d’une anthologie contenant la nouvelle « The Blue Air Compressor » de Stephen King, ainsi que des nouvelles inédites ou des réimpressions de nouvelles difficiles à trouver de différents auteurs. Ce livre est sorti aux USA, en Bulgarie, Italie, République Tchèque, Allemagne, Suède et Royaume-Uni, et est sur le point de sortir en Serbie également, ainsi qu’un pays que je ne peux pas révéler pour le moment (mais ce n’est pas la France malheureusement). 
Il existe aussi une version audio sortie à la fois aux USA et au Royaume-Uni. Toutes les informations se trouvent sur ce site.  

Club Stephen King : Ton livre le plus récent, « Shining in the Dark », contient des nouvelles de Stephen King, Clive Barker, Brian Keene (dont j’entends souvent parlé mais que je n’ai jamais lu), Edgar Allan Poe, et plusieurs autres auteurs. Elle reproduit même une ancienne histoire de Stephen King, peu connue. 
Comment est-ce que ça c’est fait?

Lilja: Tout à commencer lorsque je voulais célébrer les 20 ans du site Liljas Library. J’ai décidé de le fêter avec une anthologie, si je pouvais obtenir les droits d’une des nouvelles de Stephen King. J’ai pu obtenir ces droits et le livre est parti de là. Maintenant il a grandi par lui-même. Je n’aurai jamais imaginé qu’il sortirai dans autant d’éditions qu’il y a aujourd’hui.

Club Stephen King : Quel est ton livre préféré parmi les tiens? 

Lilja: Difficile à dire. J’aime chacun d’eux puisque c’était quelque chose de nouveau à chaque fois, mais « Shining in the Dark » est probablement celui que je préfère un peu plus que les autres. 😊 Il m’a donné des opportunités que je n’aurai pas osé rêve. J’ai été en Bulgarie pour le promouvoir et il est sorti en livre audio vendu par l’éditeur de Stephen King, non seulement aux USA, mais également en Grande Bretagne.

Club Stephen King : Hormis les livres sur Stephen King, est-ce que tu écris? Et travailles-tu sur d’autres livres? 

Lilja: J’ai écris une nouvelle, mais ce n’est pas quelque chose que je prévois de partager de si tôt. Elle n’est pas terroble… Je ne travaille pas sur un livre en particulier en ce moment, mais il y a des idées…

Club Stephen King : Et depuis 2012, tu tiens un podcast régulier avec Lou Sytsma,  « The Stephen King Podcast« . Qui est sur le point d’atteindre son 100e numéro! Pensiez-vous, tous les deux, que vous le continueriez après toutes ces années? 

Lilja: Et bien j’ai quitté le podcast après l’épisode #93, parce que je n’avais plus le temps qu’il nécessitait, mais Lou continue et s’en sort très bien. Le prochain épisode sera le 100e et j’y participerai. Je sais que je ne pensais aucunement au centième épisode quand nous l’avons lancé, mais je suis très fier des épisodes que Lou et moi avons fait !

Club Stephen King : Tu es bien entendu un fan de Stephen King, mais aussi un collectionneur. Il me semble que tu collectionne les éditions étrangères et des accessoires des films tirés de King. Peux-tu nous en dire un peu plus sur ta collection? 

Lilja: Je suis un collectionneur mais je ne peux pas me permettre toutes ces belles éditions limitées, donc j’ai restreint ma collection à 1 livre dans chacune des langues dans laquelle Stephen king a été traduit (j’en ai actuellement 54), et les accessoires des adaptations de Stephen King.
Ces accessoires ne sont qu’une petite collection, mais je les adore. Ils sont disponibles ici.  

Club Stephen King : Quels sont tes objets préférés de ta collection? 

Lilja: C’est une question difficile. Je dirai les livres que j’ai pu faire signer à Stephen King lorsque je l’ai rencontré en personne. Ceux sont mes saint-graal. 

Club Stephen King : Et quels seraient les objets les plus inhabituels ou les moins courant? 

Lilja: Il y a beaucoup d’objets étranges. J’ai une empreinte de pneu qui provient du film « Christine ». J’ai des livres de Stephen King d’une taille qui tiendrait dans une maison de poupée. J’ai un presse-papier obtenu à Londres en 2006 et qui est une édition limitée. J’ai beaucoup d’objets étranges avec le nom de King 😊

Club Stephen King : Il y a un grand nombre de projets d’adaptations en films et séries. Quel projet t’intrigue le plus? 

Lilja: La seconde partie de « Ça » sera intéressante à voir. Ainsi que « In the tall grass » (film Netflix d’après la nouvelle écrite par Stephen King et son fils Joe Hill, ndt)… et « Docteur Sleep« … et le film « Simetierre »… et je pense que j’attends chacun d’entres eux. 

Club Stephen King : Hormis Stephen King, quels autres auteurs lis-tu? 

Lilja: Je n’ai pas autant de temps que je souhaiterai pour lire, mais j’ai toujours lu les livres de Joe Hill dès qu’il en sort un nouveau. J’aime John Ajvide Lindqvist et j’apprécie une bonne biographie de personnalités intéressantes. 

Club Stephen King : Lilja’s library existe depuis plus de 20 ans. Es-tu prêt pour 20 autres années?

Lilja: Oui. Pour aussi longtemps qu’il y aura des choses à écrire, je serai présent.

Lilja: Je pense que tu as tout couvert. J’espère entendre parler de tes lecteurs. J’adore parler de King! 

An interview with Lilja, founder of the Lilja’s Library website 

The « Lilja’s Library » website, founded in 1996 by Lilja, a swedish fan of Stephen King, is without question the pioneer and the reference for the Stephen King news.
Having exchanged quite a several times with Lilja since the beginning of the 2000s, we thought that it would be interesting to do an interview with him, in order to find out a bit more about him.
Furthermore, he has published or has contributed to several books about/with Stephen King, including one that will be released with quite a big print-run !

Club Stephen King: Hello Lilja, thanks for agreeing to do this interview. For Stephen King fans that may not know you, can you please do a small introduction of yourself?

Lilja: Thanks for having me. I have been a Stephen King fan for 36 years and managed the site « Lilja’s Library – The World of Stephen King » for 23. I’ve released 3 King related books and I do lectures on King in Sweden where I live. Oh, and I’m a HUGE King fan… 😊

Club Stephen King : When did you discover Stephen King? What was your reaction ot it?

Lilja: The first book I read was « Carrie » back in 1983 when I was 13 years old. I liked it, but it wasn’t really love at first sight. Soon after I had to do a book report and selected « Cujo », much based on the cool cover but after reading that one King had me. I read all the books I could find in Swedish and once I had read them I read all the once I could find in English and I still am.

Club Stephen King : What is your favorite Stephen King book?

Lilja: I’m asked that a lot, but I can’t pick just one. King has written so many books in such a wide variety of styles that it’s impossible. I love « The Stand » and « IT » that really lets you stay in the story for a long time. I also love « The Long Walk » that is quite short but still have a great cast. I love « The Talisman » and « The Dark Tower » series but also « Mr Mercedes » that’s something totally different. And the short storeis…

Club Stephen King: You launched Liljas Library in 1996. Back in the day, the internet wasn’t what it now is. What made you launch it?

Lilja: Internet was new, and it opened your world in a totally different way. Suddenly, all this information was available to you. But still I didn’t find a website about King that had the info I wanted. I had to go to several sites to find it, so I thought, “how hard can it be? I’ll just start my own site” and here we are 23 years later…

Club Stephen King : I think that I started accessing the web by 2000-2001. I probably quickly found your website as I remember reading about the « Paranoid » dollar baby being shared online. Do you remember that one? It really gave a brand new wave of short movies and dollar babies. I may be wrong, but I sort of remember that you were working on one. Or was it Bernd?

Lilja: Yeah, it’s done by Jay Holben. A really great Dollar Baby. I actually have one of the notebooks seen in it in my collection. It must have been Bernd that was working on a Dollar Baby. I have never tried that…yet.

Club Stephen King : Over the years, you not only managed Lilja’s Library, but you also wrote and edited some books. Some of which are being translated in several languages ! I mention them to french publisher, hoping that one day they’ll be released here too… Can you tell us more about your books?

Lilja: There are three books.

1. « Lilja’s Library – The World of Stephen King » (2010). In this one I collected all the interviews and reviews I had done by then on the site plus a few that’s exclusive to the book.

2. « The Illustrated Stephen King Movie Trivia Book » (2013). A lot of questions about movies, miniseries and television episodes based on King’s work.

3. « Shining in the Dark – Celebrating Twenty Years of Lilja’s Library » (2017). An anthology collecting King’s « The Blue Air Compressor » and original stories as well as reprints of hard to find stories by different authors. It’s been released in the US, Bulgaria, Italy, Czech, Germany, Sweden, the UK and is being released in Serbia this year as well as at least one more county I can’t reveal just yet (not France though unfortunately). Club Stephen King : Your latest book », « Shining in the dark » includes stories by Stephen King, by also Clive Barker, Brian Keene (which I often hear about, but never actually read any of his), Edgar Allan Poe, and several other writers. It even reprints an old and little known story by King. How did that happen?

Lilja: It all started with me wanting to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Lilja’s Library. I decided to do it with an anthology if I could get the right to use one of King’s stories. I did, and the book grew from there. Now it’s almost taken on a life of itself. I would never even have guessed that it would be releases in so many editions as it now is.

Club Stephen King : Which one of your books is your favorite?

Lilja: Hard to say. I love the first one since that was something totally new, but Shining in the Dark is probably the one I love a little bit more than the rest. 😊 It’s given me opportunities I wouldn’t have dared to dream about. I’ve been in Bulgaria to promote it and it’s been released as an audio book by King’s publisher not only in the US but also in the UK.

Club Stephen King : Besides books about Stephen King, do you write, yourself? Are you currently working on some other books?

Lilja: I have written one short story but it’s not something I see being released any time soon. It’s not that good… I’m not working on any specific book right now but there are ideas…

Club Stephen King : And since 2012 you hold a regular podcast with Lou Sytsma, « The Stephen King Podcast« . Which is about to reach its 100th episod! Did you guys think that you’ll still be doing it after all those years?

Lilja: Well, first I left the podcast after episode #93 due to not having the time it required but Lou is still going strong. Next episode is #100 and I’ll be visiting for that one. I know I didn’t even think about episode 100 when we started but I’m very proud of the episodes we did and I know Lou will keep delivering!

Club Stephen King : You are obviously a Stephen King fan, but you are also a collector. I believe that you collect foreign editions as well as movie props. Can you tell us more about your collection?

Lilja: I am a collector but I can’t afford all these beautiful limited books, so I have narrowed my collection down to one book in every language King has been translated into (currently 54) and also props that has been in King adaptations. The later is a very small collection but I love every piece in it. I have it on display here.

Club Stephen King : What are your favorite items in your collection?

Lilja: That is hard. I’ll have to go with the books I have gotten signed by King when I have meet him face to face. Those are my holy grails.

Club Stephen King : And what would be the most unusual or less common ones?

Lilja: There are a lot of strange things. I have a tire track from the original tires unded on « Christine » in the movie. I have King books in the size that would fit a dollhouse. I have a paperweight that I got in London 2006 that’s quite limited. There are a lot of strange things with King’s name on it 😊

Club Stephen King : There are big number of Stephen King stories being turned into movies or series. What project intrigues you the most?

Lilja: The second « IT » will be interesting to see. Also « In the tall grass »…and « Doctor Sleep »…and the new « Pet Sematary »…and…well, I think I look forward to them all in their own rights.

Club Stephen King : Besides Stephen King, what other writers do you read?

Lilja: I don’t have the time to read as much as I wish but I always read Joe Hill when he has a new book out. I love John Ajvide Lindqvist and I also enjoy reading a good biography of someone interesting.

Club Stephen King : Lilja’s library has been going for over 20 years. Are you ready for another 20?

Lilja: Yes. As long as there is stuff to write about I’ll be here.
