Interview : Anthony Northrup, auteur d’un livre sur les dollar babies

Club Stephen King: Bonjour Anthony, merci d’accepter de participer à cette interview. Pouvez-vous vous présenter pour ceux qui ne vous connaissent pas? 

Anthony Northrup : Bonsoir Jeremy, je suis content d’être ici. Je m’appelle Anthony Northrup, je suis un contributeur régulier  un journal local, e Tri County Sun, depuis 10 ans, ici, dans le Dakota du Nord. J’ai aussi gagné deux prix avec les articles publiés dans ce journal. Je suis aussi contributeur depuis 10 ans à un site internet italien « Through the Black Hole Entertainment ». Je suis le créateur et gère une page facebook depuis 9 ans, la page « All Things King ». J’écri des critiques de livres, de films, des interviews de personnalités (j’en ai écris plus de 200 et je continue). J’ai couvert la Cryptican Horror Convention en 2013 dans le Minnesota, puis en 2014 et 2015. Ces mêmes années j’étais l’organisateur d’un festival de Dollar Babies. Club Stephen King : Pouvez-nous en dire plus sur quand vous avez découvert Stephen King? C’était via quels livres? Comment est-ce que ça s’est passé? Qu’en avez-vous pensé? 

Anthony Northrup : La première fois que j’ai découvert Stephen King n’était PAS via ses livres. En réalité, c’était…. via les films! C’était en 1980, j’avais 9 ans et j’ai vu « Shining » au cinéma. Il m’a foutu la trouille! (ahah). J’ai passé une bonne partie de ma jeunesse au cinéma. Le premier film que j’ai vu était un film d’horreur (Les dents de la mer, en 1975, j’avais 4 ans !). J’ai vu beaucoup d’adaptations de Stephen King lors de leur sorties au cinéma. C’était en 1986 et cela a vraiment changé mon long voyage dans le monde des fans de Stephen King. C’était durant l’été de 1986 et « Stand by me » venait de sortir. J’étais adolescent et ai ressenti des changements comme les jeunes de cet âge. Je me suis précipité dans la librairie et j’ai acheté « Différentes Saisons » en poche parce que le film « Stand by me » s’inspirait de la nouvelle « Le corps » de ce livre. J’ai continué à regarder des films tirés de Stephen King et ce n’est pa avant que le film » Simetierre » (Pet Sematary) de 1989 ne sorte, que j’ai acheté en poche, et jusqu’à ce jour c’est le livre qui m’a fait le plus peur. A partir de là, j’ai continué à acheter des livres, films, et maintenant j’ai une grosse collection de Stephen King, qui ne cesse de croitre. Je pense que ma première impression de Stephen King (qui est donc basée en premier lieu sur ses films, ayant découvert ses livres que plus tard), était qu’il était un grand conteur. Il savait comment s’infiltrer sous ma peau et comment me laisser garder la lumière allumée la nuit. C’est un maitre de son art. 

Club Stephen King : Nous connaissons tous les livres de Stephen King, et vous êtes liés aux adaptations de Stephen King. Qu’elles sont, selon vous, les meilleures et pires adaptations de Stephen King?

Anthony Northrup : De mon point de vue, les meilleures adaptations de Stephen King sont « Les évadés« , « La ligne verte« , « Stand by me« , « The Mist« , « Simetierre« , « Carrie« , « Mr Mercedes » (une série), « Le Fléau » (le téléfilm de 1994 par Mick Garris), et « Dead Zone« . Il y a de nombreux autres, mais je dois admettre, que j’ai été très chanceux de voir beaucoup des dollar babies et qu’il y en a TELLEMENT  qui sont de grandes adaptations des histoires de Stephen King. Faites moi confiance, il y a de très talentueux réalisateurs.
Les pires adaptations de Stephen King, de mon point de vue, sont « The Mangler« , « La créature du cimetière« , et certains des reboots tels que « Simetierre » (2019) et « The Stand » (2020) et quelques suites sorties directement en DVD qui ne comptent pas vraiment. 

Club Stephen King : En début d’année, est sortit votre livre « Stephen King Dollar Baby ». Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus à son sujet? 

Anthony Northrup : Oui. Il y a longtemps, j’avais lu un livre absolument énorme, le « Stephen King Encyclopedia » de mon merveilleux ami et auteur, Stephen Spignesi. C’est le « Saint Graal » des livres sur les travaux de Stephen King.
Dans ce livre, il y a un chapitre qui parle des « Dollars Babies ». Je sais beaucoup de choses sur Stephen King et son oeuvre, mais (à l’époque), je ne savais pas ce que c’était. Je me suis demandé « C’est quoi un dollar baby? » 
A l’époque, en 2013, je trainais sur les réseaux sociaux et j’ai vu passer un réalisateur du nom de Billy Hanson. Je lui ai envoyé un email, me suis présenté, on a un peu parlé et je lui ai demandé si je pouvais l’interviewer et faire une critique de son court-métrage en dollar baby qui était « Survivor Type », inspiré de la nouvelle de Stephen King dans « Brume« .
Billy a accepté et a fini par adorer l’article. Il m’a ensuite présenté à quelques uns de ses amis du programme des Dollar Babies, et j’ai fais une autre critique / interview et petit à petit des réalisateurs ont commencé à me contacter. Cela a duré pendant 8 ans. J’ai fais beaucoup d’interview et de critiques. Comme je l’ai dis tout a l’heure, en 20114 et 2015 j’ai participé à un festival de Dollar Babies et cela m’a beaucoup aidé à faire encore plus d’interviews.
Puis, fin 2019/début 2020, un auteur que je connais m’a suggéré que j’écrive un livre sur mon expérience d’interviews avec les réalisateurs de dollars babies. Une chose menant à une a utre, après 8 années à regrouper des informations, après 2 festivals de films et 10 mois d’écriture du livre, il est sortit le 19 janvier 2021, disponible dans le monde entier.
Quand je me suis assis pour écrire le livre, je me suis dis « Je veux faire de ce livre plus que juste des interviews et critiques de films ». Je voulais écrire un livre sur les Stephen King Dollar Babies, et je voulais me donner à fond. Tout donner ou ne pas l’écrire!
Le livre est bien plus que 55 interviews et 56 critiques. Il contient aussi des essais par des réalisateurs, écrivains, acteurs et fans de Stephen King. On y trouve aussi des anecdotes amusantes, des photos et bien plus.
De nombreuses critiques par ceux qui l’ont lu l’ont décrit comme une « lettre d’amour » aux Dollar Babies, à Stephen King, et à ses fans. Il est actuellement disponible dans le monde entier via Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, et le site de l’éditeur Bear Manor Media ainsi que les autres sites ecommerces.

Club Stephen King : Quelle raison vous a poussé à écrire ce livre?

Anthony Northrup : En tant que fan irréductible de Stephen King, j’avais l’opportunité d’une vie d’être accepté dans le programme des Dollars Babies. Ces très talentueux réalisateurs sont devenus des amis, m’ont fait confiance pour participer à des interviews, et je leur en fait des bonnes (interviews). Je leur ai donné toute mon attention, et le respect qu’ils méritent. Après avoir vu ces films et tout le travail que ça a pris pour les faire, discuter des combats de sces réalisateurs pour faire ces films, j’ai ressenti que le monde devait l’apprendre. Les films que sont les Dollar Babies sont véritablement incroyables et ne sont vu que par un nombre limité de personnes. Je suis l’un d’entres eux. Puisque les fans ne peuvent pas voir ces films, je voulais leur donner ce qu’il y a mieux, un livre. Pas n’importe quel livre, mais un de ceux qui montre les coulisses et leur montre les Dollar Babies comme jamais auparavant. 
Sur une note personnelle, l’écriture de ce livre est un rêve de long date. J’écris depuis 30 ans et un de mes rêves était de publier un livre. Je suis très fier de ce livre. Ce n’est pas seulement pour les réalisateurs de Dollar Babies que je l’ai écris, mais véritablement pour les fans de Stephen King.

Club Stephen King : Quand avez-vous entendu parlé pour la première fois des dollar babies?

Anthony Northrup : Comme je l’ai mentionné plus tot, c’était dans le livre « Stephen King Encyclopedia » de Stephen Spignesi. C’était la première fois que j’entendai parler du terme « Dollar baby ». 

Club Stephen King : La majorité des dollars babies ne seront jamais vu publiquement de par les règles qu’ils doivent suivre. Certains ont été partagé par les réalisateurs. Certains d’entres eux sont très bons, tandis que d’autres sont très amateurs. Selon vous, qu’est-ce qui différencient les bons des mauvais? 

Anthony Northrup : Chacun des Dollar Babies que j’ai vu est unique en son genre. Certains des réalisateurs débutent dans le métier, tandis que d’autres ont déjà réalisé des films. Je trouve que chacun de ces films est bon, et comprends que pour les débutants ce n’est que la partie visible de l’iceberg. Certains ont peut-être une bonne réalisation, d’autres ont peut-être d’excellents acteurs/actrices, tandis que d’autres sont peut-être plus proches du texte original de Stephen King (ce que les fans veulent toujours quand cela concerne une adaptation de Stephen King). Sur l’aspect technique, bien qu’il s’agit de films indépendants (certains ont de gros budgets), d’autres ont un budget plus restreint. Je trouve qu’il n’y a pas de « mauvais » film. 

Club Stephen King : En février nous avons partagé l’information d’un des premiers dollars babies qui est disponible, gratuitement, en ligne. Un des meilleurs et des plus intéressants, selon moi. « Srajenie ». Est-ce que vous l’avez vu? 

Anthony Northrup : Non, jusqu’à présent je n’ai pas eu l’opportunité de voir ce film, mais j’aimerai bien.

Club Stephen King : Etant donné que vous êtes un fan de Stephen King qui suit de très près les dollars babies, avez-vous déjà envisagé de créer votre propre dollar baby? 

Anthony Northrup : Haha! Et bien je ne suis pas un réalisateur, mais il y a des nouvelles de Stephen King que j’aimerai un jour adapter et si l’opportunité se présente de travailler sur l’une d’elles, j’étudierai sérieusement la question. 

Club Stephen King : Si l’on met de coté le fait que toutes les nouvelles de Stephen King ne sont pas disponibles pour être transformées en dollar babies. Qu’elle serait l’histoire que vous AIMERIEZ de voir adaptée? Si il était possible de la voir, qu’elle serait l’équipe idéale? 

Anthony Northrup : Si vous me demandez qu’elle histoire j’aimerai qu’un réalisateur adapte, ce serait « Le singe » du recueil « Brume« . J’aimerai aussi voir »Le policier des bibliothèques » qui serait génial! Cette histoire me fout la trouille. Donc oui, si bien foutu, avec la bonne équipe et le bon matériel et le bon casting, ce serait génial !
Et bien entendu, j’ADORERAI une bonne adaptation de « La Tour Sombre« . Il faudrait que ce soit ou une franchise (de films, ndlr) ou une série télévisée. Je peux vous dire que les fans de Stephen King ne veulent rien d’autres qu’un film « La Tour Sombre » ou une série qui rende justice à l’histoire (de Stephen King). Les studios ont trop peur de s’attaquer à quelque chose d’aussi gros, donc on n’a qu’à attendre. 

Club Stephen King : Selon vous, quelle est l’histoire qui n’a pas été adaptée jusqu’à présent (que ce soit en dollar baby ou en film) qui mériterait de l’être? 

Anthony Northrup : Comme je l’ai mentionné auparavant, « Le singe » et « La Tour Sombre », clairement. « Rose Madder » et « Joyland » seraient bien à vois en films. Beaucoup d’adaptations de Stephen King sortiront dans les prochaines années, mais ces deux seront parmi celles que je veux voir le plus en film. 

Club Stephen King: Encore merci d’avoir pris de ton temps pour accepter de répondre à ces questions. Y a t’il quoi que ce soit que tu aurais voulu que je te demande?

Anthony Northrup : Merci Jeremy, ça a été un plaisir de faire cette interview, je l’ai apprécié. Je voudrais  juste dire que si certains des lecteurs (de cette interview, ndt) sont réalisateurs ou envisagent de réaliser un film inspiré des histoires de Stephen King, n’hésitez pas à visiter la page du site officiel de Stephen King sur les règles contrats des Dollars Babies. Ils existent depuis plus de 40 ans, et on a besoin que cela perdure pour les générations à  venir.

Je serai le co-hote. Les fans seront en mesure de voir les dollars babies en ligne, de participer à des sessions de questions/réponses avec les réalisateurs, et je participerai aussi à une session de questions/réponses au sujet de mon livre « Stephen King Dollar Baby : le livre ». 
C’est un gros événement et les fans devraient s’y intéresser!

Anthony Northrup : Hello Jeremy, glad to be here. Well, my name is Anthony Northrup, I have been a contributing writer for our local newspaper, the Tri County Sun here in North Dakota for 10 years. I also am a two-time award winner for my contributing articles in our local newspaper. I am also a contributor to Through the Black Hole entertainment webpage based in Italy for 10 years. I am the creator and head writer of the Stephen King fan page, All Things King on Facebook for 9 years. I write film reviews, book reviews, promoting, and celebrity interviews (over 200 of them and counting). I have covered the Crypticon Horror Convention in Minnesota in 2013 and again in 2014 and 2015. In 2014 & 2015 I hosted the Stephen King Dollar Baby Film fest. I just had my first book published by Bear Manor Media Publishing. It is called, STEPHEN KING DOLLAR BABY:The Book.

Club Stephen King : Can you please tell us about when you discovered Stephen King? Thought what books? How did that happen? What did you first think?

Anthony Northrup : The first time I discovered Stephen King was NOT from his books. It was actually…at the movies! It was 1980, I was 9 years old and I saw THE SHINING in the movie theater. It scared the hell out of me! (haha!). I spent a lot of my time in my youth in the movie theater. The first film I ever saw was the horror film (JAWS in 1975 I was 4 years old!). I saw many Stephen King films when they were released in the theater. It was in 1986 that I really began my long journey into King fandom. It was the summer of 1986 and STAND BY ME came out. I was in my teens and was going through changes just like most people that age. I ran to the bookstore and bought Stephen King’s DIFFERENT SEASONS in paperback, because STAND BY ME was based on King’s story, ‘The Body’ , which is in that book. I continued watching King’s movies and it wasn’t until the film, PET SEMATARY came out in 1989, that I bought that paperback, and to this day is the scariest book I’ve ever read. From there, I continued buying books, movies, and now I have a huge Stephen King collection that goes above and beyond. I think my first impression of Stephen King, (again, this is based on the films first, books later), was that he was a great storyteller. He knew how to get under my skin and leave the lights on at night. He is just a master of his craft.

Club Stephen King : We all know about Stephen King books, and you are related to Stephen King adaptations. What do you think is the best, and the worst Stephen King adaptation?

Anthony Northrup : In my opinion, the best Stephen King adaptations are, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE, STAND BY ME, THE MIST, PET SEMATARY, CARRIE, MR. MERCEDES (tv series), THE STAND (Mick Garris version from 1994), and THE DEAD ZONE. But there are many others, however, I have to say, I have been VERY fortunate to see a lot of the Stephen King Dollar Baby films and there are SO many that are just great adaptations of King’s short stories. Trust me, there are some amazing and very talented filmmakers out there. The Worst Stephen King adaptations in my opinion are, THE MANGLER, GRAVEYARD SHIFT, and some of the « reboots », such as PET SEMATARY (2019), THE STAND (2020), and a few straight-to-dvd sequels that really don’t count.

Club Stephen King : At the beginning of the year, your book « Stephen King Dollar Baby » was released. Can you please tell us more about it?

Anthony Northrup : Yes. A while back, I read the monstrosity-sized book, STEPHEN KING ENCYCLOPEDIA by my wonderful friend and author, Stephen Spignesi. It is the « holy grail » of books about King’s works. In the book, there is a chapter that talks about « Dollar Babies ». I know a lot about Stephen King and his works, but (at that time), I didn’t even know. I asked myself, ‘What’s a Dollar Baby? » Then in 2013, I was just hanging around social media and came across a director by the name of Billy Hanson. I sent him an email, introduced myself (small talk), and I asked him if I could interview him and review his Dollar Baby film, SURVIVOR TYPE which is based on Stephen King’s short story in the book, SKELETON CREW. Billy agreed and in the end loved the article. Then he introduced me to some of his Dollar Baby friends and I did another interview/film review and word got around and directors started contacting me. This went on for 8 years. I did Dollar Baby interviews & film reviews. As I said before, in 2014 & 2015 I did the Stephen King Dollar Baby film fest and that helped A LOT to get even MORE interviews. Then in late 2019/early 2020, a writer friend of mine said I should do a book about my experience interviewing the many Dollar Baby directors. One thing led to another and after 8 years of gathering information, 2 film fests, and 10 months of writing the book, it was published on January 19th, 2021, worldwide. When I first sat down to write the book I thought to myself, ‘I want to make this book more than just interviews/film reviews’. If I was going to write a book about Stephen King Dollar Babies, I wanted to go the full-throttle. Go big or go home! The book is more than just interviews with 55 Dollar Babies and 56 film reviews, it also includes essays by directors, writers, actors, and fans who know about Stephen King. It also includes fun facts, trivia, photos, and much more. Many reviews from those who’ve already read the book have called it a « love letter » to Dollar Babies, Stephen King, and to the fans. Club Stephen King : What was the reason behind you wanting to write this book?

Anthony Northrup : As a diehard fan of Stephen King I had the opportunity of a lifetime being accepted into the Dollar Baby program. These very talented filmmakers became friends and they trusted me to interview them and I did everyone of them a solid. I gave them 100%, and the respect they deserved. Once I saw these films, what it took to make them, talking with these filmmakers about their struggles making these films, I felt the world needed to know this. The Dollar Baby films are truly amazing and are seen by a limited group of viewers. I was one of them. If the fans couldn’t see these films, I wanted to give them the next best thing, a book. Not just any book, but one that pulls the curtain back and shows them the Dollar Baby world like no one else really has before. On a personal note, doing this book was also a lifelong dream of mine. I have been writing for 30 years, and one of my life’s dreams was to have a published book. I’m very proud of this book. It’s not just for the Dollar Babies directors that I wrote this, but truly for the Stephen King fans.

Club Stephen King : When have you heard of the dollar babies?

Anthony Northrup : As I mentioned before, it was in the Stephen Spignesi book STEPHEN KING ENCYCLOPEDIA . That was the very first time I ever heard of or read anything with the name « Dollar Baby ».

Club Stephen King : Most of the dollar babies won’t ever be seen because of the rules that they have to follow. Some of them are sometimes shared by their directors. Some of them are really good and some of them are really amateur-ish. What do you think makes them good, or bad?

Anthony Northrup : Each Dollar Baby film I’ve seen is unique in its own way. Some of these filmmakers are beginners in the industry, while others have done several film projects. I find all of these films to be good, and realize for the beginners this is just the tip of the iceberg. One might have great direction, others may have outstanding performances, while others may be very close to King’s original text (which fans always want when it comes to King adaptations). On the technical side of things, although they are independent films (some have big budgets), others have less of a budget, I find there are no ‘bad’ films.

Club Stephen King : In February we shared the news that one of the very first dollar babies was available for free, online. One of the best and most interesting one : « Srajenie ». Have you seen it?

Anthony Northrup : No, at this time I have not had the opportunity yet to see this film, but would welcome the chance to do so.

Club Stephen King : Given that you are a Stephen King fan and follow closely the dollar babies : have you ever considered creating your own dollar baby?

Anthony Northrup : Haha! Well, a director I am not, but however, there are some Stephen King short stories I would like to see adapted someday and if opportunity came to help work on one I would seriously consider doing so.

Club Stephen King : Let’s put aside that not all Stephen King stories are available in the dollar baby program. Short story or novel, what is the story that you would LOVE to adapt? Shall you were able to do so, with the right team?

Anthony Northrup : If you are asking which short story I’d like to see a filmmaker adapt, it would be THE MONKEY from SKELETON CREW. I also think LIBRARY POLICEMAN would be terrifying! That story scares the hell out of me. So, yeah, done right, with the right crew, equipment, and cast, it would be amazing! And, of course, I would LOVE a proper DARK TOWER adaptation. It would have to be either a franchise or a tv series. I can tell you, Stephen King fans want nothing more in their lifetime than to see a DARK TOWER film or tv series do this story justice. Studios are too afraid of taking on something that huge, so we continue to wait.

Club Stephen King : According to you, what is the one story that hasn’t been adapted so far (as a dollar baby or an official commercial movie) that would deserve to be?

Anthony Northrup : As I mentioned above, THE MONKEY and THE DARK TOWER, definitely. ROSE MADDER and JOYLAND would be nice to see on film. Many Stephen King adaptations are coming out over the next several years, but these two would be a couple of my favorites to see on the big screen.

Club Stephen King : Once again, thank you for giving us some of your time. Is there anything that you would have wanted me to ask you?

Anthony Northrup : Thank you Jeremy, it’s been my pleasure to do this interview with you, I’ve had a great time.
